The Latex Shorts I Didn’t Think I Needed

I’ll be honest. When we first started stocking latex shorts, I thought they were a bit pointless. Why buy shorts when you could have a catsuit? What would you actually do with a polished pair of shorts outside a studio or event?

I was wrong. Latex shorts are not a smaller version of a catsuit. They have their own job, and for many wearers they are one of the easiest pieces to use regularly.

The first time I actually wore them

We had a plain black pair in the studio, made in 1.0 mm latex with a high waist. I pulled them on one evening to check the fit for a customer who had asked about sizing. The latex had that familiar slight resistance as it settled over the hips, then the waistband held everything neatly in place without the rest of the body being covered.

I ended up keeping them on for the evening. A catsuit gives you a complete second-skin silhouette, but shorts give support and compression where you want it while leaving your legs and upper body unrestricted. After a while, I stopped thinking about them.

What latex shorts are actually useful for

1. A layer under a catsuit

For some outfits, latex shorts can help create a smoother layer around the hips and upper thighs. They may also reduce direct rubbing between the skin and another garment during longer wear.

This depends on the construction of both pieces. Latex-on-latex can grip rather than slide, so use a suitable latex dressing and take care when putting layers together. If a combination feels tight, pulls at the seams or restricts movement, do not force it.

2. A simpler way into latex

A pair of shorts is less involved than a full catsuit. You can learn how latex feels against the skin, how much dressing you need and how the garment behaves when sitting and walking, without committing to a full-body outfit.

That makes shorts a useful starting point for someone who has never worn latex, as well as a practical piece for someone who already owns a catsuit.

3. A focused shape and silhouette

High-waisted latex shorts can give the waist and hips a clean, close-fitting outline. Under a skirt or dress, they can work as a private base layer, although a polished finish may catch the light at the hem depending on the cut and fabric above it.

The effect is different from ordinary shapewear. Latex has its own shine and surface feel, and the finished appearance changes with the thickness, polish and lighting. Matte or low-sheen latex looks quieter, while polished black latex responds strongly to hard light.

Getting the fit right

Latex shorts should fit closely, but close-fitting does not mean painful. The waistband should sit securely without digging in, and the leg openings should follow the upper-thigh line without cutting into the skin or riding up.

If the shorts feel loose once they are dressed, they may be too large. If you cannot sit comfortably, breathe normally or move without strain, they are too small. Do not automatically size down because latex stretches. Use your actual waist and hip measurements against the brand’s chart, and ask before ordering if those measurements fall between sizes.

A made-to-measure pair is worth considering when the waist and hips fall into different size ranges. It is much easier to enjoy the slight resistance of 1.0 mm latex when the pattern is working with your body rather than fighting it.

Why 1.0 mm makes a difference

We use 1.0 mm latex for this style because it gives the shorts a supportive, substantial feel while still allowing normal movement. The waistband holds its shape, the fabric has a smooth polished finish and the shorts do not feel flimsy when you sit down.

Thinner latex, such as 0.4–0.6 mm, feels lighter and more flexible. Thicker latex gives more structure but also adds weight and resistance. The best choice depends on the pattern, the amount of coverage and how long you expect to wear the garment.

Why I changed my mind

I initially saw latex shorts as a compromise between underwear and a catsuit. They are not. They are a proper garment with a different purpose: easier everyday wear, a useful base layer and a focused silhouette without the commitment of full-body latex.

If you are building a latex wardrobe, shorts are a sensible place to start. If you already own a catsuit, they may become the piece you reach for when you want the feel of latex but not the full ceremony of getting into a complete suit.

The best test is simple: after the first twenty minutes, do you still want to keep wearing them? With the right measurements and thickness, the answer can be quietly surprising.
